Getting Birth Certificate in Pakistan

This is one of the series where a location and a process are explained for the common good.

If your child is born in Liaquat National Hospital or Agha Khan University Hospital (AKUH), following is the precise detail you need to follow to get a birth certificate from your local city district government. If you had commissioned a different hospital then the general outline is still applicable.

This birth certificate is pre-requisite to several things (such as Form-B) and should be applied as early as possible.

Step 1: Get Hospital Birth Certificate

This must have already been given to you by the hospital before your wife get discharged. It's a pre-requisite to many things. So make sure you have it. Get it photocopied as the original would later be kept by the Unison Council.

Step 2: Locate and Visit your Local Town Office

Before you apply, you must be having a valid hospital birth certificate as well as original CNIC's of both parents. If your child is born in Liaquat National Hospital or Agha Khan University Hospital (AKUH), then you should visit Gulshan-e-Iqbal Union Council.

Directions to reach this town office are as follows: While going from National Stadium to Civic Center, take a left turn at Civic Center, and come to University Road. Now cross first petrol pump (fuel station) on your left, and take a left turn afterwards. After around 100/ 200 meters, you'll see a park (it's known as Khawateen Park) and adjacent to it is the Gulshan Town Office where you have to apply for the Birth Certificate.

Step 3: Fill the form and Pay the Fee

A form will have to be filled in both English and Urdu. You'll have to submit copies of both parents' id cards (CNIC's) and the original birth certificate from the hospital. It's handy if you know the CNIC number of child's grandparents (i.e., your parents) as well.

The fee in case of usual registration is perhaps Rs. 100 and for late registration (>6 months after child's birth) is Rs. 300. Please update me in the comments section if the fee is any different.

Step 4: Wait for the Birth Certificate to be Ready

In this highly sophisticated and increasingly fast world, your town office will take 3 months to prepare your child's birth certificate. It will come in the form of paper with both English and Urdu names of parents as well as the child and other important information.

Step 5: Thank God.

The fees now is Rs. 300 or 500 (I think).

When I went for my 2nd son's Birth Certificate about a year ago (in Clifton UC-10), I filled the form in English & Urdu. They gave me the Certificate after 3 to 4 working days and the Certificate was computerized (unlike before, when it was prepared by hand).

  2. Not sure about the days/ timings. Obviously Sunday would be off and going on a Saturday would be risky (thanks to the power-saving initiatives of the government). Safe bet on timings would be 9am to 3pm.

  4. Got the birth certificate done for my son from UC 7 Jamshed Town (near Hill Park)
Charges are Rs 150 that you need to pay at National Bank nearby (in my case it was Sindhi Muslim Society - near Allah Wali chorangi)
It gets done is 5-10 working days. A computerized certificate from NADRA is issued with the names both in English and Urdu

I got it for only 100 Rs. in just 1 working day i.e. i submitted on Saturday night and got it Monday evening. I did pay an extra 100 Rs. to him for Mithai :)
In our locality a UC representative sits from 6 to midnight who collects all the documents related to birth certificates, marriage etc. He is responsible for going to UC office and getting things done. The certificate is written in both english/urdu though it has only been 3 months since my son is born but on certificate it is written Late registration but again the fees i've been asked is only 100 Rs. My locality is in Keamari town.

So finally I got a birth certificate (very late registration). Turned out that the process was fairly simple but perhaps you need little extra cash to keep it that way :)

I got it done from local town office although my son was born in another town. The person I spoke to said this is not a problem at all; in fact the certificate I got had the stamp of yet another town. Shouldn't be a problem anyway because the certificate is issued by NADRA and had two other stamps including an stamp of birth and deaths registration dept.

Should I mention that I never got any formal invoice of payment/challan; the person asked for more than 300 as the fee telling me these are govt charges + late fee + penalty + blah blah blah; I therefore cannot tell you what was the exact fee and how much khancha was involved :) but I got it in 3 working days.

For people like me living in UAE it was nearly impossible to get my birth certificate but then my friend Imran told me about this website http://www.mamooinpakistan.com . Submitted my query and they did my work in just 7 days... Loved their customer service. They really follow up and respond to my every minor detail. Feels proud to have such services still working in Pakistan
