Fighting Depression Part II

This is in continuation to the last post, as part of the "theory of life" series.

The first step towards fighting depression is very simple: accepting that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. You either want to live with it or you want to overcome it.

My life has come to a halt: I am passing time as if I were waiting for something to happen. What it is, I don't know. Perhaps, death. Or it could be threat from something: perhaps, I am waiting to be challenged. But I was not always like this. I used to be a very ambitious teenager who was very good at studies. Something went wrong somewhere. I can identify a few reasons very easily: life is very different outside the school/ college/ university. You are not given a "course outline" with a defined lecture and exam schedule in practical life. Once I identified that something is wrong with me, I tried many different ways but, surprisingly, it all boiled down to two very basic elements of human nature: eating and sleeping.

Yes, I agree that disturbance in eating/ sleeping might just be an effect of your depression and controlling them would be like treating the symptoms rather than the disease. But isn't depression itself a symptom and not the disease?

For many years, I held this opinion that every effect is due to some cause and mastering the cause will empower you to get the desired effect. After several years, now the line between cause and effect has gone blur. Let me give you an example: I thought I whistled whenever I am in a good mood; one day, when I was a bit gloomy, I tried it the other way and it had an effect to some degree.

Once you develop proper eating habits (low fat, no colas, etc.) and a sound sleep (6-8 hours) at night, the next step is to build up motivation. More on that later...
